Knot Work

New Works by Kristen Tordella-Williams
Opening March 14th 6-8pm

Join One Arts Center in welcoming Mississippi based artist Kristen Tordella-Williams as she presents Knot Work with an opening reception Saturday, March 14th from 6-8PM. Knot Work is a series of sculptures that employ the use of weaving yarn, embroidery, and knotting through handmade paper, wood, and mixed media. The artist shows us manipulations of thread, bound images, varied patterns, and processes that reflect the meditation involved in repetitive action.

In addition to the two and three-dimensional work shown at OneARTS, there will be a performance by Lifetime Guarantee, a collaboration between Jenny Hillenbrand and Kristen Tordella-Williams. Lifetime Guarantee focuses on the relationship between the body and household tools and products. The performance will begin at 6:30pm and will last roughly thirty minutes.

Kristen works across media exploring imagery and sculpture generated from the performative process. She uses performance and sculpture to investigate issues of labor, identity, gender, and memory using an array of material commonly found at hardware stores, supermarkets and recycling bins. Raised in Massachusetts, Kristen received her B.F.A in sculpture from UMass Dartmouth.  She completed her M.F.A concentrating in Sculpture and Dimensional Studies from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2012. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been an artist in residence at Salem Art Works and Franconia Sculpture Park. Kristen was recently a visiting artist at Coles Castings in Shaftesbury, England and worked as a documentary crew member for the 7th International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art at Pedvāle Open-Air Art Museum in Latvia. Now, Kristen is working on building a paper studio at Millsaps College. She is greatly enjoying her first year as an Assistant Professor of Art and is currently teaching drawing, digital arts, sculpture, performance art, and paper making. She lives and works in Jackson, MS and is represented by Art Shape Mammoth.

H. L. Wilson writes in “A Short Sketch of the Evolution of the Bungalow: From its Primitive Crudeness to its Present State of Artistic Beauty and Cozy Convenience,” circa 1908,  “Number 352 is a good example of a large roomy house at moderate cost.  Every room is light and airy, and there is not an inch of waste space.  The exterior, with its well proportioned lines, is very attractive, and the floor plans will repay careful examination.  A most satisfactory house in every respect.”

Artist Bio:
O’Leary is a painter and photographer who has recently exhibited at Aljirra Contemporary in Newark, New Jersey, Wayfarers in Bushwick, New York and Marshall Arts in Memphis, Tennessee.  Her collaborative book of photography with Terri Phillips was published in 2013.  She lives and works in New York City and Mount Sinai, New York.

We had a great open house last Sunday and felt such a wonderful warm welcome from our local community. Thank you for your support as we get our new community art center going! We have some fabulously fun family classes and events coming up! Our October classes for children and families include Printmaking, Paper Mache Pumpkins and Masks, Halloween Costume Making (a free event for members!) and parents, mark your calendars, October 24th is your chance to plan an evening out on the town (or a quiet one at home), while your kids enjoy the art center with arts and crafts and games at our first Parents’ Night Out! A pizza dinner will be provided and allergies accommodated. We also offer after school art classes on Mondays and Wednesdays for children 5-11. And Toddler Time will start up in November (free coffee for parents while the kiddos get creative with our supplies!) There’s a lot going on! Come be a part of it!

In addition to classes for kids, families and adults, we’ll always have a selection of artwork and crafts from local artists and artisans for sale. Are you an artist, artisan or maker? We’ll transform our space into an arts & artisan market this November and December for the holiday season and are looking for more great work to sell. To submit your work for consideration, please email us some images and a short bio/statement about yourself and your work. (email below)

Birthday Parties!
Do you know where you’ll be having your child’s next birthday party? Consider having an arts and crafts party at the center! We’ll set up different age-appropriate art and craft stations and provide guidance for the guests as well as play art themed games. If you’re interested, please email us ASAP to reserve your desired date and time!

Want to help?
We’re still getting set up and are in need of quite a few items, which we hope we might be able to find in the community at yard sale prices. Our wish list includes: folding tables and chairs, a coffee table, side tables, a love seat and plush chair, a changing table, art & craft supplies of all kinds, office supplies, retail display items, a TV and DVD player or projector, lamps, shelving, storage bins and tubs, tools, games, blankets, random stuff for still life arrangements and well… you get the idea. If you don’t need it anymore, we’ll probably want it! We greatly appreciate any and all offers!

We welcome your feedback! Is there a class, event, or workshop you’d like to see us host? Please email us!
